Invented by Richard James while playing with tension springs
Slinky is a Swedish word that means traespiral or sleek or sinuous
First slinky sold in 1945 in Philadelphia at Gimbel's Department store
Each slinky is made from 80 feet of wire (the original type)

Betty James was inducted into the toy hall of fame in 2001
